Credit card surcharging is the practice of adding a fee to a customer’s bill when they choose to pay with a credit card, to offset the cost of processing the transaction. Knowify’s surcharging feature allows you to collect an additional 3% from your client if they choose to pay by credit card. Note that federal law prohibits surcharges on debit card payments; Knowify will automatically block a customer from paying by debit card if a surcharge has been applied.
Knowify’s surcharge is set at 3% - you may request that we lower this number if you’ve negotiated a low credit card processing rate (since many state laws require that surcharges not exceed the actual cost of processing payments), but it cannot be increased even if you’re paying more than 3% for credit card processing. Visa explicitly caps surcharging at 3%, preventing businesses from charging more than that percentage, and card network rules prohibit practices that unfairly disadvantage one network over another - in practice, that results in a maximum surcharge of 3%.
If you were using Intuit Payments before connecting Knowify, your invoices will continue to reflect Intuit’s standard percentage-based processing fee. However, at the end of each month, you will receive a rebate for the difference between the Knowify partner rate and Intuit’s advertised rates.
